Here at E-Lux we love our warm weather home of Southern California. However, we've been enlightened by our customers from around the country in colder climates of the great fun they have riding their electric bikes in the cold of winter and even in the snow. Intrigued, over the past couple of winters our team has ventured to our local mountains in the winter with our fat tire electric bikes to check out the hype. Sure enough - riding ebikes in the snow is a BLAST!
If you think that riding your e-bike in the winter is impossible, think again. With some minor preparation and the right gear, you can safely enjoy riding in every season. Even if the weather outside is frightful, you don’t have to miss out on the fun of riding your e-bike in the snow.
Proper Clothing Is Key
Dress in layers to prepare for those snowy, winter rides. Although you may feel cold when you start, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, remember that your body will warm up as you ride. Moisture-wicking material, such as wool or spandex, makes a great base layer to keep your skin dry as you work up a sweat. Wear waterproof outer layers to repel moisture from the outside.
Gloves
You will need to keep your hands warm, and waterproof gloves can help keep your fingers toasty and dry. Look for a pair with grips on the fingers and palms to combat against slippery handlebars.
Cover Your Head
Don’t forget that you lose a lot of body heat through your head. You will need a hat for sure, but make sure that it’s thin enough to fit comfortably underneath your helmet.
Protect Your Face
Consider wearing a facemask or balaclava to ensure that your ears, cheeks and nose are protected from the cold. Sunglasses or goggles can help protect your eyes from the glare from the snow and can shelter them from frigid breezes.
Keep Your Feet Dry
Waterproof shoes can keep your feet from becoming soaked when you’re dealing with snow and slush. Warm socks are also helpful, and you can even consider buying cycling shoes or booties that are a little larger than your normal size to allow for thicker socks.
Carry an Emergency Kit
Pack a waterproof bag with some emergency items to take with you each time you ride. This is a great place to store your cell phone, along with basic first-aid supplies, an extra jacket and pair of gloves, tissues and a flashlight.
Prepare Your Bike
You will also need to take some steps to ensure your e-bike is ready for the snow. Depending on the conditions in your area, you may need knobby or fat tires. You should also consider fenders to keep snow and slush from splashing on you. Install lights and reflectors on the front and back of your bike.
Riding your e-bike in the snow can be an exhilarating experience. Make sure you have the right gear to keep you safe and comfortable, and then get out there and enjoy your winter wonderland.
