1) Fully Charge the Battery After Purchase
When you first receive your bike, plug it in and charge for at last 12 hours. This initial charge helps to condition the battery out of the box and makes it work better. The process ensures that there is current actively going through all the cells of the battery. It is easy to get impatient and want to ride right away. However, doing this long, initial charge will help to ensure the battery is in optimal condition.
2) Avoid Complete Drains
Try to avoid letting your battery completely drain. If you let it completely drain too often, the battery health will diminish. It is okay to occasionally use it to its fullest extent. So, you don’t need to panic if you realize you are a long way from home with only half a charge left. Nonetheless, trying to avoid these situations by charging regularly will help to maintain optimal battery health.
3) Don’t Consistently Overcharge
Similarly, you don’t want to overcharge your battery. Fortunately, modern batteries are better at handling this situation than they used to be. Nonetheless, it can cause a small portion of the battery to become overused as it discharges then recharges repeatedly. The simple solution is to charge your bike fully then unplug it until you will use it next. Overcharging for a few hours isn’t a big issue. However, try to avoid leaving it plugged in for days or weeks on end.
4) Store at About 60% Charge
If you are going to store your battery for an extended period, charge it to about 60% first. This charge level is optimal for health during long-term storage. A completely charged or uncharged battery will deteriorate more quickly. For example, if you live in an area with cold winters and don’t want to ride, charge your battery to 60% and unplug it from the bike for storage.
5) Avoid Temperature Extremes
Batteries typically operate best in temperatures above freezing and below 110-degree Fahrenheit. Keeping it between 60 and 70 degrees is an even better range. This doesn’t mean that you can’t ride on a very hot or very cold day. However, if the weather is extreme, try taking your battery inside to charge instead of leaving it in the garage or on a bike rack.
