What You Need To Know About Your E-Bike Powertrain

You likely already know that your electric bike features a battery-powered electric motor that can propel the bike forward. However, most riders don’t know much more about their powertrains or what to expect from them. In particular, the batteries are often a source of mystery for e-bike users.

The Key Powertrain Parts
Electric bikes have powertrains that combine the traditional, geared pedals of a standard bicycle with an electric motor fueled by a battery. For some bikes, this can be used in either a fully-powered mode or pedal-assisted mode. The former requires no effort from the rider and the latter can last up to 70 miles of range or more.

The basic principle of an electric motor works using electromagnetism. By changing the polarity of an electric magnet, the motor turns its shaft, generating power. This is then transferred through gearing to provide sufficient torque to move the bike.

A typical lithium-ion battery will last up to 1,000 charge cycles. In other words, the battery can be charged up to 1,000 times from 0% to 100%. Since a single charge can provide up to 70 miles of range, this represents up to 70,000 miles on a single battery. Many will also become less efficient after three to five years.

If you are not charging the full battery every time, it may only count for a partial charge cycle. However, depending on your charging practices, you may see fewer charge cycles.

Exceeding the Maximum Charge Cycles
You may worry about what will happen when you exceed your expected charge cycles. The good news is that this is simply an estimate by the battery manufacturer of how many times it can be charged before it will experience a significant loss of efficiency. So, if you charge a lithium-ion battery 1,100 times, it will still work fine but may have reduced range.

It is worth noting that batteries wear out even when they aren’t in use. In fact, poor storage of a battery may cause it to lose efficiency faster than using it. If you need to store yours for an extended time, remove it from the bike and store it at around 60% charge in a cool (not freezing but under 70-degree Fahrenheit) and dry place.
